Chios mastic is a natural product obtained from the mastic tree Pistacia lentiscus of the Greek island of Chios, located in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. Chios mastic is traditionally used in Greece to improve digestion, and it has recently been found that mastic components may be useful in killing Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria and protecting the stomach lining.
The properties of Chios mastic against H. pylori are associated with the presence of various bioactive compounds in it, including polyphenols, flavonoids and terpenoids.
Chios mastic can inhibit the growth and reproduction of H. pylori bacteria. The components of mastic essential oil α-terpineol and (E)-methylisoeugenol show activity against four different strains of Helicobacter pylori. Chios mastic can prevent the adhesion (sticking) of H. pylori to the gastric mucosa. This action prevents the bacteria from colonizing the stomach, which is a key step in the development of H. pylori infection.
Chios mastic has high antioxidant activity, which helps fight oxidative stress caused by H. pylori infection. Antioxidants in Chios mastic can help protect the gastric mucosa from damage caused by free radicals and inflammatory processes.
Chios mastic has anti-inflammatory properties that can help calm inflammation caused by H. pylori infection. Reducing inflammation can promote healing and restoration of the gastric mucosa.
Therefore, Chios mastic is recommended to be used in the diet during diseases caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, as an additional source of terpenoids, polyphenols and flavonoids, which have anti-helicobacter activity.
